Summary/Abstract: After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in October 1918, the young republic faced a wide range of issues, including the poor social situation that became a breeding ground for radical leftist ideas. The emerging communist party attempted to benefit from the social tension. At the end of 1920, the left wing of the social democratic party announced a general strike that was related to the tension inside the party. Extraordinary measures were declared in many places where unrest flared up.The general strike was exceptional for its territorial scope. Furthermore, in addition to workers from only several industrial enterprises, agricultural workers primarily participated in the strike. In 14 places in total, control was taken over by farming facilities and company boards were established. The disturbances were suppressed within several days in collaboration with the Roudnice District Political Administration and the military. The resolute intervention of the state power resulted in the quick pacification of the situation without any violence or substantial material damage. The abortive communist event led to multiple consequences. The revolution participants were arrested, investigated, and taken to court. Many participants of the unrest incidences lost their jobs and had to find a new way to earn a living. Up to the 1921 New Year’s Eve, the police stations in the area were reinforced. The state responded to the critical situation and issued many instructions for similar situations. Civil offices paid greater attention to communist meetings and activities for some time. The communist movement in the Libochovice district did not go silent, and less than a year after the general strike, it impressively succeeded in the local authority elections.
