Summary/Abstract: The article seeks to summarise the beginnings of the healthcare system of the newly established Czechoslovak Republic, with a short historical digression to the period prior to 1918, not only in Cisleithania but also in Transleithania, the parts of Austria-Hungary. Primary attention is focused on the summarisation of the relevant fundamental legislation and mapping the network of healthcare facilities in the First Czechoslovak Republic. Partial attention is also dedicated to the health condition of the population with respect to then diseases, also mentioning the Spanish flu epidemic. In order to achieve an overall picture of the healthcare situation in the First Czechoslovak Republic in the early 1920s, a partial additional comparison with the situation in Hungary, the ‘main’ heir of the Transleithanian state administration of the eastern half of the Habsburg Empire, will be carried out.
