Summary/Abstract: The main focus of the article is on the linguistic exchanges, which as Bourdieu says, are also symbolic exchanges. It explores the relations between two linguistic forms – the “norm” as related to one of the so-called dialect forms of the Bulgarian language – the “Northwest dialect”. By analyzing this relation, I attempt to understand the stigmatizing constructions surrounding the Northwestern region in Bulgaria. The analysis is based on field observation and interviews, which allow me to put forward new insights on various symbolic gains and losses that social actors can obtain using one or another linguistic form in different social fields. In the end, I raise new questions that stem from the sociological analysis and can be explored further.
