Summary/Abstract: Orthodox Church had clearly stated that all actions directed by man against nature are sin. Sin results from the separation of man from God. In Orthodoxy, ever since the beginnings, the lives of monks and nuns, saints and Christians had set an example of communion between man and nature. Therefore, the Orthodox Church had no need to defi ne its position in a scientifi c or political manner, i.e. through conferences, articles, books or political platforms. However, it appears that Orthodox countries face serious environmental problems, and that the church had involved in solving these problems only recently. In fact, most of these problems are a result of Communist regimes and, following their decline, of the Western-influenced materialistic attitude. Even though the Church is involved in effective actions and in increasing ecological awareness, Christians have an individual duty to respond to the call of seeking fi rst the Kingdom of Heaven, and all others will be added to them.
