DIGITIZATION IN LIBRARIES IN MONTENEGRO: RESEARCH RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to present the state of digitization in Montenegrin libraries, being an important segment of memory institutions that preserve cultural heritage, and to give recommendations for future work. The introductory part gives an overview of international initiatives, recommendations and current trends in the building of digital libraries, and the digitization of cultural heritage in general, along with a short overview of the beginnings of digital libraries. The methods used in the research of the current state of digitization in Montenegrin libraries included a tailor-made questionnaire and an analysis of websites of libraries and of their annual activity reports. An analysis of the collected data produced an overview that can help libraries and decision-makers to identify obstacles and find optimal solutions for digitizing their rich resources. Finally, the paper provides a number of conclusions and recommendations. They are meant to contribute to digitization polices of libraries and cultural heritage institutions in general, so that they could get a new, leading role in the processes of building information and knowledge-based societies.
