Summary/Abstract: Knowledge management as one of the key resources in the knowledge economy is becoming more and more important due to its changes and obsolescence on almost daily basis. Libraries have special place and role in the knowledge society because of their great experience in preserving, selection, evaluation and dissemination of the accumulated knowledge. Progress in technology development brought certain changes in the processes mentioned above, so libraries had to adapt and accept new role in knowledge management. Information literacy as an ultimate competence in the wealth of information, demands changing librarians' role and its transition from a mediator (between users and resources) to active participator (in a users education) with the aim of better use of available resources. In the knowledge economy intellectual capital is the most important, and its components – human, structural and relational capital are not simple sum of individual knowledge, but their synergy. Recognition of the intellectual capital in the academic libraries resources, particularly in the librarian profession contributes to creating competitive advantages of the academic institution in the academic environment and in knowledge society.
