Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the development of the number of Hungarians in Slovakia based on the data of the 2021 census. In addition to the data on ethnicity and mother tongue, the so-called second ethnicity was also included in the questionnaire for the first time. Based on combinations of data according to ethnicity, mother tongue and 2nd ethnicity, 4 types of Hungarian ethnicity are distinguished. In our study, we examine the differences in the number, composition and types of Hungarians living in the southern Slovakian counties with a large proportion of Hungarian inhabitants and those regarded as diaspora. We will also examine the contribution of the three variables included in the analysis to the evolution of the number of Hungarians at the county level. The tables in the appendix provide a deeper understanding of the relationships presented in the study.
