Summary/Abstract: The idea of uniting the peoples of Eastern Europe within the framework of a federation had already been mooted in the mid-19th century. The populist writers of the 20th century saw the way of solving the “national destiny questions” in finding a specifically Hungarian (or Eastern European) way instead of the integral revisionist policy—in a broader sense, thinking about the fate of the country in the alliance of great powers. The representatives of the Hungarian Populist Movement that came on the scene in the early 1930s treated the issues of Hungarian domestic and foreign policy as an integral whole. Following László Németh, the members of the young generation of writers argued that the renewal of Hungarian domestic policy could also be the basis for a new foreign policy open to neighbouring countries. The foreign policy views of the populist writers are mainly reflected in their columns and, to a lesser extent, in their correspondence and notes. Since they had a great influence on 20th century Hungarian political thought—just think of the idea of the Third Way, which took shape in the 1956 revolution—it is particularly worthwhile to get to know their views in more detail.
