Summary/Abstract: The first part of the study summarizes the historical antecedents, circumstances, and contexts of the emergence of leisure time. In the second part, the author discusses the development of leisure in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s and 1970s, drawing on contemporary sociological research, including the Czechoslovak Stratification Survey of 1969, which remains unique still today. The third part focuses on the leisure time of Hungarians in Slovakia, also based on sociological research conducted in the 1960s and 1970s. This study serves as an introduction to the article in the next issue, in which the author will analyze the post-1989 transformation and current state of leisure time among Hungarians in Slovakia.
