Summary/Abstract: The article aims to present the evolution of Lipova in the first years of the 17th century, in the context of the Principality of Transylvania, based on medieval sources and specialized literature. The first 6 years of the 17th century represent a turbulent period in the history of the fortress and the city of Lipova, marked by frequent military clashes between Transylvanian, Turkish and imperial troops. Lipova goes from one possession to another. It was administered by Prince Sigismund Bathory, then by the men of the Habsburg, general George Basta (1602–1604), later becoming part of the Principality of Transylvania, during the time of Stefan Bocskay (1604–1605). The main military force in the fortress of Lipova was represented by the Serbian mercenaries who, through betrayal, in July 1605, surrendered Lipova to the Turks who ruled it until April 1606, when it was recaptured by the Transylvanians.
