Yanyovden in the Village of Brodilovo: Notes from the Field

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to present an ethnographic description of ritual actions and practices inherent in the calendar holiday Enyovden (Yanyovden) in the Strandzha village of Brodilovo. The text focuses on issues related to the peculiarities of local Midsummer traditions of the past and some of their transformations in the 21st century. Within the framework of this local study, data is organized to reveal what the musical dimensions of the celebration are. In the text I use new ethnographic details from personal interviews with the inhabitants of Brodilovo, as well as my own field observations.
