Summary/Abstract: The University of Silesia in Katowice was founded in 1968. Its foundation was influenced by a political situation and system conditions of a totalitarian country at that time. The use of an intellectual potential of the staff of the University of Silesia for the purposes of both the region and the country became one of the aims of the ruling representatives of a communist party. The process of shaping social attitudes of young people constituting the basis of social elites might be realized both by means of a didactic process, and the activity of political and youth organizations functioning in the Higher School. Thus, the political elites were greatly interested in the development of the influences in this environment. However, it did not mean an unconditioned obedience to political indications and guidelines directed at the environment of the new University through the party structures. The period in which the University of Silesia was created, clearly indicated how independent and dishumble the academic environments (especially the student ones) could be. The process of foundation and the development of the University of Silesia in Katowice pointed out the extent to which its existence influenced the social conditioning of the functioning of the region. At the same time, it is visible how the social and political conditioning of this region influenced the activity of the bodies and people of the University, conditioning the realization of tasks deriving from the aims of the higher school.
