Summary/Abstract: The study draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture to answer the question of whether contemporary television consumption depends on individuals’ class position. A multidimensional correspondence analysis on local survey data collected in Poland in 2017 is used to map TV preferences and proceed to analyse the distribution of socio- demographic and class factors underlying this space. Two main oppositions in tastes are identified: new vs. traditional TV and orientation towards information vs entertainment. These oppositions follow class differences. The study sheds light on the interplay between age and social position in articulating class distinctions and reveals the differences in social origin between types of TV consumers. The article enriches our understanding of class distinctions by showing how cultural orientations within popular and multi-platform television environment work to reinforce class structure in contemporary Poland.
