SHELTER AS A MARKER OF OTHERING IN CONTEMPORARY ART

Summary/Abstract: In contemporary art, the concept of othering has been approached by various artists using diverse indicators. This study focuses on artists who interpret the concept of othering through a shared perspective, utilizing the metaphor of shelter and employing the shelter form or the embellishment of shelter spaces as formal indicators. The research revolves around artists and their artworks that explore the imagery of shelter within the contexts of being left behind or in the past, societal exclusion, isolation, migration, gender, and gender discrimination. The study compiles information about works by artists such as Nil Yalter's "Lump House," Ayşe Erkmen's "At Home/-ish," Hale Tenger's "We Didn't Go Out Because We Were Always Out/We Didn't Go In Because We Were Always In" and "Chest Room," Mario Merz's "Giap's Igloo," Mehwish Iqbal's "Home Away From Home," and the collaborative work of Miriam Shapiro and Judy Chicago titled "Womenhouse". The research involves a conceptual analysis of these works, illustrating their connections to the subject matter and providing interpretations. Data for the research was obtained through document analysis and assessed using qualitative analyses.
