LUDOMUSICOLOGY AS A MUSICOLOGICAL APPROACH IN VIDEO GAME STUDIES

Summary/Abstract: "Ludomusicology" is a term coined in the last fifteen years by music researchers who have studied games in an attempt to approach game music "through the lens of musicology". A society of the same name was founded in 2011 by researchers from different universities in Europe with an academic interest in game music. The primary goal of the community is to create a hub and point of contact for individual studies on music as a fundamental component of video games. The founding researchers aim to bring together interested academics under one roof, encouraging them to collaborate, and to develop specific methods and terminology for the study of game music, i.e. to ensure that ludomusicology is recognised as an autonomous discipline that produces knowledge on various dimensions of the relationship between games and music. Since its foundation, the society has regularly organised scientific meetings and contributed to studies aimed at defining the scope and limits of ludomusicology, outlining its methodology, and identifying and solving its main problems. The question is what should be understood by the "musicological perspective" that is supposed to guide the field, i.e. what kind of contribution musicology is supposed to make to the study of game music. The aim of this study is to examine the current accumulation of academic activities under the name "ludomusicology" and to present an evaluation of musicology's contribution to the development of game studies as an autonomous discipline. The article also aims to contribute to the limited place of the field in Turkish literature.
