Biographical Sketch of the Life of Miklós Asztalos

Summary/Abstract: The study attempts to briefly summarize the life of Miklós Asztalos, which is rich in twists and turns. In contrast to previous publications on the subject, this review does not approach its subject in terms of personal or family experiences. I base my findings on archival documents and my own research. I have relied heavily on Asztalos’s own memoirs and correspondence, and in line with the published source text, I also deal with the historian’s youth at greater length. During the reconstruction of his scientific development, I briefly touch on his literary connection with Zsigmond Móricz. In contrast to the literature that highlighted the historic and literary attitudes, I touch on Asztalos’s entire literary functioning. There has also been little mention of the circumstances of the genesis of his recollections, so in my work I also tackle the decades following World War II.
