Summary/Abstract: In the XVIII and XIX century Italy became the destination of the so-called Grand Tour, the “journey of formation” undertaken by young and rich northern Europeans in order to approach the classical culture. At that time, the myth of Italy, which had been built during the previous centuries thanks to the mild climate, the heritage of the ancient world and the blooming of the Renaissance, became even stronger. Nevertheless, among foreign travellers who loved Italy, Italians were deemed unworthy to live in that extraordinary country. In particular, Neapolitans were seen as human beings affected by all the faults of the Italians, while Naples itself was seen as a paradise inhabited by devils.
