Summary/Abstract: The European Union’s education policy principles increasingly emphasise the role oflifelong learning (LLL), a diverse concept in the educational literature and one of the key competences as it is understood today. The concept has become one of the most important pedagogical paradigms in recent decades throughout Europe and is also the focus of intense political debate. The main thrust of teacher professional development, the most important element of which is professional renewal, is also based on the concept of LLL. The study deals with the continuing professional development of pre-school teachers in Slovakia and Hungary and examines the current system of continuing professional development through qualitative content analysis and comparative analysis. The aim of the study is to analyse and compare the system of professional development of pre-school teachers in Slovakia and Hungary and to identify similarities and differences. The research demonstrates that there are similarities and differences in the continuing education systems in Hungary and Slovakia, which have an impact on the formation of teachers’ professional competences and that the data obtained can serve as an inspiration for the further development of the continuing education systems in each country.
