Summary/Abstract: The research focuses on several important economic centers from the region of Stara Planina – Tryavna, Elena, Kotel and Gabrovo, which show intensive economic development at the end of the 18th and in the 19th centuries. Thus, those urban centers became engines of the economic development 3of the Bulgarian lands and initiators of the processes of cultural, religious and political emancipation among the Bulgarians in the 19th century. The most important factors for their economic growth appeared to be the commercial activities and crafts – they boost the process of capital accumulation. The population increase in the 18th and 19th centuries was another factor for economic growth. The reforms initiated by Sultan Mahmud II at the beginning of the 19th century also had a positive effect on the economic development of the pre-Balkan settlements and coincided with the period of capital accumulation among Bulgarians.
