Summary/Abstract: This article examines the link between 𝑆𝑘𝑎𝑧𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑒 𝑧𝑎 𝐵𝑢𝑘𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑒 (A History on the Letters) and 𝐼𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑦𝑎 𝑆𝑙𝑎𝑣𝑦𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑏𝑜𝑙𝑔𝑎𝑟𝑠𝑘𝑎𝑦𝑎 (Slav–Bulgarian History). It traces how the former shaped the views of Paisius of Hilendar, the first representative of the Bulgarian National Revival, on the issues concerning the creation of the language of St. Cyril and St. Methodius, the role of Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher in this process, as well as the work of his disciples. The paper reveals Paisius’s critical attitude towards the opinion of Constantine of Kostenets on the emergence of the written language of the Slavs, as Paisius reconsidered it in the spirit of his National Revival ideas. The facts adduced make it clear that Paisius of Hilendar was more than a century ahead of the scientific criticism on the emergence of Old Bulgarian language and literature.
