Summary/Abstract: The Vakif Gurebâ Hospital founded by Bezm-i Âlem Valide Sultan, the wife of Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II and the mother of Sultan Abdulmecit, is the first modern hospital of the Ottoman Empire. For this reason, the institution deserves particular attention. In this study, the data found in the accounting ledgers of the hospital, such as the purchases made during the period of foundation, assignment of duties, and the items in the patient menus are evaluated. By this way, the study seeks to trace the path followed during the foundation of a hospital. The fact that the first accounting ledger of the hospital, located at the General Directorate of Foundations under the call number, 2734 has never been published and analyzed makes this study significant. Accordingly, important information concerning the herbal and chemical ingredients used in the medicine of the period, food and drink choices, and the employees of the hospital and their daily needs is acquired. Therefore, it is aimed to shed light on the socio-economical history of the first modern medical institution of the Ottoman Empire.
