Summary/Abstract: During the Ottoman Empire’s move from the traditional to the modern, changing one’s clothing was one of the emblems of the fight between the elites. This change was important in terms of being formal as well as representing a new appearance in the public sphere. Indeed, from the second half of the 18th century, when the center began to rebuild the periphery, the clothes chosen for the bureaucratic and military elites heralded a new era. In this process, it is seen that the dress code for the ulama came to change, who was considered one of the Ottoman elite groups. In this study, which is intended to address the causes and consequences of the change in the clothes of the Ottoman ulama from the mid-18th century to the middle of the 19th century, silip, as well as how the ottoman ulama responded the Ottoman ulama respond to the change of clothes? How did it affect the innovative, status quo split within the ulama? was the change of clothes an “imposition” of modernization? Or Was it a sign of the struggle amongst the elites? This study seeks answers for these questions. For this end, ordinances determining the dress codes, chronicles and researches and studies works on the subject will be examined.
