Summary/Abstract: In 1698, Maria Kazimiera d’Arquien Sobieska left the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for a long journey to Rome, which was her residence until 1714. The stay of Jan III’s widow in the Eternal City and her public image were reported in certain journals.The work refers to selected source materials to show some aspects of the Polish Queen’s role in the world center of Christianity. The paper deals with the ceremony ac- companying the entry of the Queen, the issue of her residence and status in the social hi- erarchy, contacts with Popes Innocent XII and Clement XI, cardinals in the circle of the Roman Curia and the aristocracy.
