Summary/Abstract: Based on the privileges they received, the market towns enjoyed a lesser degree of autonomy compared to the cities. Their basic institution was the decision-making council with the right to issue documents and to use its own seal. The paper presents the responsibilities of the town management (the judge, magistrate and general assembly), which were developed according to local conditions and customary law: tasks related to taxes, common goods and fairs, control of real estate transactions, authentication of wills and contracts, judging and issuance of related documents, the protection of its own privileges and rights, representation of the community claims in other courts.
