Summary/Abstract: Between the two world wars, the protection of religious monuments in Transylvania had to face a new situation, a situation that also required new responses. A Committee for the Historical Monuments of the Reformed Eparchy of Transylvania was therefore established, and László Debreczeni began his work surveying the monuments. Several art monuments were saved, some churches were renovated, but some other churches were demolished. After the Second Vienna Decision in 1940, while the dioceses of Northern Transylvania, being part of the Hungarian system again, participated in the census of architectural and art monuments, initiated from Budapest, the Southern Transylvanian parishes (in Romania) were left out of this work. To rectify this deficiency a new monument census was carried out after 1944, the data of which reflect the level of knowledge of the parishes about the respective monuments at that time, but also provide a starting point for the inventory work of historical church monuments. Making a brief presentation of the process, we also provide insight into the census of monuments in 1954, and at the same time we want to draw attention to the need for research into the activity of the former Committee for the Historical Monuments of the Reformed Eparchy of Transylvania.
