Summary/Abstract: The funeral inscription of Tudora is the jewel in the crown of Bulgarian epigraphy. In its perfection it surpasses all others and, in its content, it is perhaps the most informative small inscription of the Golden age. This is due to its creators – Gregory the Presbyter, the hymnographer Eva and bishop Constantine of Preslav. Due to the ciphertexts embedded in the main text, today’s readers can date the inscription. They can also understand the circumstances around Simeon’s death, read names from Boris’ family, notice the “silent” opposition against Peter, etc. In poetical terms and in the use of various techniques (isopsephia, anagram, filigree figure, etc.) the inscription becomes an exemplar for imitation in the creation of other inscriptions from the Golden age and from the next period.
