Summary/Abstract: Although the genre of the joke is not considered uniform in literature, as it may even differ from one language to another, its main elements can be well grasped by highlighting some distinctive features. One typical element is that a proper name, primarily a personal name, often appears in a story ending in a punch line. In my study, I examine the types of Hungarian personal names appearing in Hungarian jokes, the characteristics of their use and their meanings different from the proper names. I maintain that personal names (some of their types, predominantly first-name forms) are common in jokes since they are a very important and easy-to-update, recognizable element of the scenario, and even a departure from the use of a proper name, its becoming stereotypical in use in this type of text, can be particularly well traced. To validate my theory, I conducted a study on the corpus of 9,000 jokes, and the results support my hypothesis.
