Summary/Abstract: The accurate assessment of honesty appears to be an important factor preventing insurance crimes. The aim of this study was to compare the ability of employees of insurance companies to detect lies with similar skills of people in other occupations. Study subjects were shown ten videos that featured statements concerning personal experience causing strong negative emotions. Half of the statements contained a lie. Having watched every video, the subjects were asked to say whether a presented sto- ry was true and indicate how certain they were of their response. The findings confirmed the results of earlier studies on credibility assessment with expert participation: employees of insurance com- panies were no different from a control group in terms of accuracy of their assessments. In addition, they more often assumed that a person was lying while the accuracy of lie detection was negatively correlated with the certainty of their assumptions. The paper contains conclusions for practical appli- cation and further studies.
