Summary/Abstract: Introducing regular Swedish lessons at Vytautas Magnus University in the interwar years period resulted firstly from the initiative raised by the Swedish activists, enthusiasts of the cultural relations with the Baltic countries, mostly by Sigurd Curman and Adolf Schück. Most important contribution in the implementation of that initiative from the Lithuanian side was made by Jurgis Savickis and Vladas Pryšmantas. Implementation took almost five years because of the lack of financial support from the Lithuanian side, as well as initially insufficient interest of the university. Episodic lectures in the Swedish language were given in 1932 and 1934 with the financial support of private Swedish persons. Regular teaching of the Swedish language was introduced with the Spring term 1935, when Lithuanian government decided to give financing for that purpose. Leaders of the Swedish-Lithuanian Society in Stockholm treated teaching of the Swedish language in the universities of all three Baltic countries as a necessary precondition for achieving closer cultural relations of Sweden with the Baltic countries and creating sustainable cultural cooperation.
