“A Sound Mind in a Sound Body”. Propaganda and Image of the Reich Labour Service in Lithuanian Periodicals 1942–1944

Summary/Abstract: The realization of the idea of the Reich Labor Service (RLS) in Nazi-occupied Lithuania officially began in January 1942 with the public announcement of the recruitment to the German youth organization. As part of their policy of Germanization, the Nazis aimed to indoctrinate the younger generation in Lithuania with National Socialist ideology, so the RLS camps were chosen to achieve these tasks. When the voluntary mobilization of youth into the Reich Labor service began in January 1942, one of the most important recruitment tools was the periodical press, which, under the control of Germans, became the main source of agitational and propaganda articles. For this reason, it is on the basis of the periodicals “Wilnaer Zeitung”, “Naujoji Lietuva”, “Į laisvę”, “Ateitis” and “Ūkininko patarėjas”, published in Lithuania during the Nazi occupation, that the article examines the manifestations of the Reich Labor Service propaganda and National Socialist ideology in the Lithuanian press. The objective of the study was twofold: to search for the links between the main discourses of Nazi domestic and foreign policy propaganda and the ideologized invitations to the Reich Labor Service for the Lithuanian youth prepared by the occupying regime, and to analyze the agitational articles and invitations to the German youth organization, which were aimed at boys and, individually, at girls. As the Reich Labor Service organization in Kaunas was the most active in Lithuania, the article also discusses the activities of the RLS in the temporary capital.
