The Frequency and Adjustment of Accentuation Norms of Primary (Simple) Nouns

Summary/Abstract: Attention of this paper is confined to variability accentuation of the primary (simple) nouns. In 2003, the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language, taking into consideration the codification, the traditions of the Lithuanian accentuation norms and the trends in the spoken language, reviewed the accentuation of primary (simple) nouns and issued recommendations on the adjustment of accentuation norms. The list of discussed words (45 primary (simple) nouns) are grouped according to the aspect of the abundance and frequency of the words, based on the Electronic Frequency Dictionary (Common Press Words of the 20th Century, 2004). The principle aim of this article is to present the changes in the norms and their codification by taking into consideration the abundance and word frequency. This research allows to come to the conclusion that the present issue is these most frequent primary (simple) nouns whose accentual norms were adjusted (menas 4, 2; rūšis 1, rūšis 4; pora 3,4 "two things of the šame kind"; proga 1, proga 4; rinka 2, Anka 1; lėšos 1, lėšos 4; audra 4, audra 1; tinklas 4; smėlis 2; plentas 1, plentas 2) these ones must be noticed and learned. The following ones were incorporated into the new accent norms: menas 4 (registered y et as the The Frequency and Adjustment of Accentuation Norms of Primary (Simple) Nouns Adjustment of accentual norms reflect the trends of the spoken language (according to facts of dia-lects and studentspeech). Recommendation of the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language makes affordable the ground for native speakers of Lithuanian to accent in a right, exemplary way.
