Summary/Abstract: The article explores how the oral/folklore sources on a Romanian Phanariot prince, Nicolae Petru Mavrogheni, acts as a pre-scientific history resource for historians, as well as a way to understand Romanian collective mentality in relation to the Phanariotes rule. It relies on two rhymed chronicles, examining the ways in which otherness, as well as cultural intimacy, were perceived in the process of shaping modern Romanian identity.
