Summary/Abstract: This communication deals with the recategorization of the spanish noun “camino” and its serbian equivalent “put”, and describes contexts of use of the mentioned words in two languages through examples taken from the electronic corpus of Spanish and Serbian. Although the prepositional function of these words is recognized in corresponding dictionaries, we investigate up to which semantic-pragmatic domains the originally spatial use has extended and in which stages of modification we find these two grammaticalized element in Serbian and Spanish. From the data analysis we deduce that the Spanish word “camino” has been recategorized and grammaticalized with the support of the preposition “de” (or “a” in Latin American Spanish) modifying a common or a proper name, a pronoun or even a subordinate clause, and extending its original spatial value to the temporal and notional domain. As for the situation of the Serbian word “put”, it did reach the stage of total recategorization and works in all the contexts as a preposition, morphologically invariable. It´s strange that, apart from the examples of spatial domain, the corpus doesn’t record any examples of the temporal use of “put”, and the evolution toward the meaning of purpose is noted just in a few cases.
