Summary/Abstract: Migration and family life has become a critical issue in contemporary Europe. There is also a debate that the Council of Europe and the EU have taken different approaches to address this issue. Besides, in international practice, there is still no universal definition of the family, moreover, the issue of the interplay between family unity and family reunification in the European legal framework is particularly interesting, since in one case it raises questions on an upcoming separation (expulsion) and in the second -on an already existing separation (denial of entry). The article reviews both the legal framework of the Council of Europe and the European Union, as well as case law of ECtHR and CJEU and derives practical conclusions of the interplay.
