Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of 21st century, Republic of Srpska and Brčko District follow the steps of Serbia where the practice of performing archaic, untempered rural multipart singing has already developed. It was performed by vocal ethnic groups in towns all around the country. For almost whole two decades, these groups have made an effort to make their repertoire contain traditional songs that belong to the territory of Serbian heritage and culture. Singers and leaders of ethnic groups considered the preservation of heritage as their mission. As the time passed by, the repertoire of ethnic groups, in addition to songs from the territory of Serbian heritage and culture, expanded to include the songs from the Balkans as well. Thus today’s ethno groups learn and perform songs from other regions as well if they are popular in the media, and in some way they are marketed as “ethno”. This project deals with the preservation of musical heritage by looking at the repertoire of ethno groups from Republic of Srpska and Brčko District. Also, it searches for reasons that shifted the focus from performing songs from the territory of Serbian heritage and culture to the territory of Balkan and Pannonian culture. It also aims to answer these questions: Does this contribute to the development of performing arts or preservation of elements of intangible cultural heritage or is it just acculturation?
