Summary/Abstract: It is by no means just the common currency crisis that has to be dealt with and remedied. The current crisis has partly exacerbated and accelerated new processes that require an urgent and sustainable response at all levels of European integration, from the uppermost European institutions and member-state governments to the wider public. The paper addresses two key issues. Firstly, it deals with some of the basic challenges and dilemmas facing the European Union. Secondly, it analyzes the current eurozone crisis in terms of the very beginnings of the common currency project, its implementation and the consequences, and the alternative options for the future of the euro.
