Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the title of Baldwin I, the king of Jerusalem between 1100 and 1118. Based on a corpus of diplomatic sources, supplemented by sphragistic material and historiographical sources, the text pre- sents the socio-political context of the formation of the royal title, forged during the conflict between the mon- arch and the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Dagobert of Pisa, over the rule of the Holy City. Hence, Jerusalem played a special role in Baldwin I’s title and his ideological programme.
