Book Cover as an Invitation

Summary/Abstract: “Novels from Auschwitz” as a publishing phenomenon of the last decade are linked notonly by title and plot but also by their covers’ visual composition. By examining the poeticsof titles, subtitles, and blurbs, the article analyzes the covers of forty-eight such novels interms of the visual motifs and characters associated with the visions of concentrationand extermination camps these books convey. The author scrutinizes the paratextsagainst the backdrop of the modern functioning of book covers in the publishing marketand within the framework of critical theories that consider such notions as kitsch, weakimages, setting, and redemptive story.
