Reception of translations of the Qur’an by Polish converts to Islam

Summary/Abstract: The Qur’an, Islamic Holy Book, has a record of at least six full translations into Polish, which are available in the publication circulation. Among the academics, the most frequently used translation is the one by Józef Bielawski – an Arabist who was the only one to translate The Qur’an directly from the Arabic language. The aim of the article is to analyze the reception of the translations of the Qur’an into Polish by Polish converts to Islam. The study combines a linguistic and a sociological perspective. Translations of the Qur’an into Polish will be embedded in the analysis of the religious language of Polish converts to Islam, including its sources before and after the conversion. The reception of individual translations will be discussed on the basis of a quantitative study carried out in April 2022 among Polish converts to Islam. The study included six translations of the Qur’an into Polish by J. Bielawski, A. Ünal / J. Surdel, R. Berger, M. Czachorowski, J. Tarak- -Buczacki and a modified translation of J. Bielawski published by the Sakinah Foundation. The initial, historical translations were firmly rooted in Christian stylistics and phraseology. Bielawski’s translation – although it laid the foundations for the Polish Islamic vocabulary – was met with considerable criticism by Polish Muslims. Perhaps its scientific character plays a significant role here, which does not seem to correspond with the theological dimension of the holy book of Muslims. The remaining translations were made by Muslims, which gives them more credibility as translated texts by Muslims for Muslims. They complement the mainly English-language sources used by Polish Muslims.
