Summary/Abstract: The author analyses some the more prominent films that were shown at 5. Human Rights Film Festival in Zagreb as a part of the "women's writing on film" section with respect to their historical, political and cinematic relevance. From films breaking celluloid ground in the realm of form and style, such as the surrealist "The smiling Madame Beudet" by Germaine Dulac, or Vera Chytilova's experimental "Daisies"; to traditional narrative films targeting mainstream audiences such as Dorothy Arzner's "Dance, Girl, Dance, providing among other things, relevant commentary on the eternal (feminist) question of the owner of the gaze, the author offers novel and stimulating readings, neglecting neither these films formal, nor their political substance.
