The history of the first Belarusian newspaper „Nasza Dola”

Summary/Abstract: The first Belarusian legal newspaper, Nasza Dola, was published in Vilna (Vilnius) in September–December 1906. It was initiated by Jan Łuckiewicz, a prominent figure of the Belarusian Socialist Hramada. The editorial board consisted of young people: his brother Anton Łuckiewicz, writer Alojza Paszkiewicz, and social activist Franciszek Umiastowski. The formal publisher, editor and de facto sponsor of the newspaper (hoping to make a profit) was the Vilna-based Jan Tukierkies. However, due to disagreements within the editorial board, the Łuckiewiczs left Nasza Dola and created a new Belarusian newspaper, Nasza Niwa, while Tukierkies continued to publish Nasza Dola. However, all but the second of the six issues of Nasza Dola were confiscated. At the same time, the newspaper managed to become a centre for the formation of the Belarusian national identity, an outpost for the future development of the famous writers Kanstancin Mickiewicz (Jakub Kołas), Antoni Lewicki (Jadwihin Sz.) and others.
