Summary/Abstract: At the turn of July and August 2012, as part of statutory research carried out by Warsaw School of Economics (SGH), academic staff members of the Commercial Insurance Department con- ducted a questionnaire survey whose aim was to learn about behaviour of Polish households related to prevention and elimination of natural catastrophes’ consequences. The main respond- ents (764 households took part in the survey) were residents of suburban and rural areas whose house’s floor area did not exceed 200 m2. Their houses are located near a river or artificial bodies of water in the level area. According to the answers provided, over 70% of the respondents have insurance protection against fire and other fortuitous events, but it results mainly from the fact that their properties are financed by mortgage loans. The lack of appropriate insurance cover is caused by low awareness or a high price for such cover. There is a visible lack of unanimity as to making catastrophe insurance more universal as well as compulsory. Unfortunately, as has been the case to date, every fifth respondent believes that consequences of catastrophes should be financed by the state.
