Summary/Abstract: Substance abuse is a significant factor in the maintenance of criminal behaviour and substance abuse treatment plays an important role in preventing recurrence. The last decade of the 20th century in the world are marked with a number of innovations in the treatment of prisoners addicted to psychoactive substances. For persons convicted and sentenced to substance abuse is a need to implement specific treatment programs that would be consistent with their characteristics and represent an appropriate response to identified needs, such as diversion programs, but camp programs, programs for individual and group counselling, programs modelled on the therapeutic community, non-institutional monitoring and others. The introduction of modern treatment of substance abuse requires considerable human and material resources.
