Summary/Abstract: The author defines a concept of security within a new world order, taking into account the global, multi-dimensional and trans-national nature of challenges to security. He argues that Europe needs a holistic and integrated approach to security and a strategic vision that goes beyond Southeastern Europe. Only with such a strategic vision European politicians will be able to understand Turkey’s strategic importance in its region and its contributions to European security. Geostrategically, Turkey is located near to most of the existing conflict areas. Yet, Turkey highly contributes to stability and security in its region. This is achieved through bi-lateral ties and through Turkey’s willingness to contribute to multi-lateral initiatives like, for example, in Afghanistan and Iraq. By combining Islam and democracy, Turkey can be a model for the Islamic countries of the region. With broad and sweeping reforms being enacted, Turkey enhances its attractiveness as a partner for Europe, sharing a common vision of peace, stability and human rights.
