Summary/Abstract: The aim of the survey was to examine the state of agricultural insurance in individual farms in the north of Poland. Farms which took part in the survey had been selected by means of the stratified random system. For the confidence level of 0.95 the minimum num- ber of farms in the survey was 384. 420 farms of individual farmers with the area exceeding 1 hectare took part in the survey. The survey shows that 89 perc. of the farms took out compulsory agricultural insurance. Approximately 11 perc. of the farmers did not have any insurance. The average annual cost of insurance of the crops in a farm exceeded PLN 300, of agricultural buildings PLN 280 and of farmer's third party liability PLN 70. More than half of the farmers said that it was an average burden for the farm. Voluntary insurance was less popular. Merely 20 perc. of farm owners took it out. Only 7.6 perc. of farmers' arable land is covered by voluntary insurance, and the cost of such insurance amounts to almost PLN 100 per one farm. In the survey, visi- ble and directly proportional relationship between the area of the farm and the insurance amount was observed.
