Summary/Abstract: Liberal democracy is a complex theoretical and ideological response to the historical evolution of the North Atlantic center. (Liberal) democracy is a limited (conditional) political system that needs certain conditions to function stably and effectively: economic prosperity, cultural legitimation and social cohesion. Social cohesion in a society, necessary to legitimize the democratic system, cannot be obtained without an integrative culture that determines a shared identity. Multicultural societies or supranational organizations such as the EU have difficulties in maintaining or creating a functioning democratic system due to the weakening or inability to create integrative culture, a shared identity and, consequently, an appropriate level of social cohesion necessary for the functioning of democracy.
