Summary/Abstract: During the Soviet regime the Lithuanian Catholic Church was one of the most important factors in resisting the policy of russification and protecting Lithuanian national and cultural identity. Today the Church contributes much to the consolidation of the civil society. But in the conditions of democratic pluralism it faces new challenges in adjusting itself to the needs of intensly developing society and its westernized institutions.
