Summary/Abstract: The Communist Party of Austria did not originate, unlike in many other European countries, from the cleavage in the workers‘ movement, but was founded as an independent political subject. Its goal was to use the unstable political and social situation and carry out the Bolshevik revolution in the republic under the Alps. In 1920s, the party fell into lethargy. It lacked a profile topic and a charismatic leader. A low level of action readiness was caused by frequent fraction politics and inadequate financial funds. The communists were therefore unable to leave the shadow of the social democracy. The cooperation of both parties on a single platform was out of question. The social democrats did not trust the communists and considered them to be more a sect working under the supervision of Moscow than a regular political subject. A subsequent improvement in the unfavorable situation of the Communist Party was brought by the negative impact of the Great Depression. Only the specific milieu of an authoritarian and totalitarian regime enabled communists to achieve such a position they vainly strive to gain under democratic conditions.
