Summary/Abstract: The Lower Danube, part of an European river par excellence, was and continues to be the most important gate of navigation on the continent. Along the years, the great contemporary powers - the Nazi Reich and the Soviet Union - disputed control over the Lower Danube. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union was the main player in this region. The geopolitical changes of the two decades that passed after the end of the Cold War and the Russian aggression against Ukraine demand a new international solution to the „issue of the Lower Danube".
