Summary/Abstract: On August 24, 1944, the river battleship monitor "Mihail Kogălniceanu" was attacked and sunk by Soviet aviation on Brațul Chilia. Between 1951 and 1955, the Ministry of the Armed Forces initiated actions to clean up the monitor. To bring the ship to the surface, the support of the Ministry of Transport was requested, which showed disinterest in this activity. It was only in the fall of 1955 that the rescue works began, which were completed in 1956. On the order of the Minister of the Armed Forces in 1959, the wreck removed from the Danube was handed over to the Ministry of Transport for it to make its scrap metal collection plan.
